Indian Train Worker Dumps Waste From Moving Pantry Car, Sparks Public Outcry

A clip showing an Indian train pantry car worker dumping waste while a train was moving has sparked dismay, calls for CCTV and fines, and renewed debate over railway housekeeping, bins and waste collection.

A pantry car worker on an Indian train has sparked widespread dismay after a clip showed the worker emptying waste from a moving train during a journey, raising renewed concerns over littering habits and waste disposal on railway routes.

The clip shows the pantry car worker dumping waste mid-journey. The incident has prompted viewers to lament the damage caused to India’s environment and criticise habits that treat railway tracks, rivers and roads as dumping grounds.

Viewers have also pointed to gaps in civic sense despite the availability of infrastructure and called for measures including CCTV surveillance, fines and better environmental education beginning with parents.

Indian Railways, meanwhile, has highlighted its existing housekeeping and waste-management measures. The railway system carries out housekeeping services on 1,450 train pairs and has introduced bio-gas plants and composting facilities at stations.

Past incidents involving improper waste disposal have also resulted in staff removals and penalties against contractors. The issue has further triggered debate over the availability of bins and the effectiveness of waste collection arrangements on trains.

The latest clip has therefore brought attention to both individual responsibility and the systems required to prevent waste from being discarded during train journeys, amid continuing concerns over littering along railway routes.
